The Lives Of Gallant Ladies, 5 books of gold leaf later....

The surface of the leather has been worked over with a very fine silicon carbide paper and lots of small pieces of gold leaf have been applied to the surface. Each square of gold leaf is about 1.5mm square and overlaps the squares next to it.
It has taken longer than i expected... about 2 days longer in fact.

Over the weekend I will be hoping to create more texture by pressing various things into the surface and tooling in a more trad way.

hey,
again sorry...
was it always the plan to cover up a large portion of the board with leaf?or was that something that just seemed like the right thing to do??I guess sanding the skin provides texture to the surface...how does that effect the appearance of the leaf.(by your pic it seems a really mottled surface shaded??)
On a personal note mark, I recently tried surface gilding for the first time ever, and I am very pleased I might add that your first photo demonstrates to me that I got it right first time in every way!!!!and heres me thinking I was winging it
best
