The Studio 5 beginners course in Bookbinding.
An 18 day intensive introduction to bookbinding. The student will be expected to make 6 books and 3 boxes. The course is delivered in three, 6 day modules.
Module 1, Introduction to bookbinding.
The first module is in bookbinding. The student will make 5 books that explore 4 sewing techniques, variations in construction, from the flat back to the rounded and backed, multi-sectional case bound book. Single sheet and section folding, material manipulation. etc
Module 2, introduction to leather.
The module introduces the student to working with leather. Skills developed will include edge paring, body paring, foil work and end band making in leather.
Leather manipulation.
Detail of pleated leather work and foil work. Other variations in leather work are also explored.
Module 3, introduction to box making.
Following on from the two previous modules, 3 boxes are made for 3 of the books made in modules 1 and 2.
Module 3, the slip case.
A simple slip case made for the first book made on the course.
Module 3, the single tray box.
A single tray box for one of the multi sectional flat back books, again made in the first module.
Module 3, the two tray drop back box.
Finally, a two tray drop back box for the book made in the second module. Students are introduced to label making, blocking in gold leaf. The course is intensive and with the student using all the appropriate hand tools and workshop equipment. For more details please contact Studio 5.

Mark studied bookbinding at Guildford College of Technology, Japanese bookbinding and related subjects at ' Studio Livre' (Tokyo) and London College of Printing - B A Book Arts and Crafts (Hons)
Opening his first studio in his home city of Lincoln in 1992 and Studio Five, London in 2003. Mark works in fine contemporary bookbinding, book arts, printing and box making / art.
He teaches in Studio Five, the U K, Europe, the U S A, India and Japan.
Elected Fellow of Designer Bookbinders, member of The Society of Bookbinders, elected member of the Art Workers Guild, elected member of The Society of Designer Craftsmen,The Tokyo Bookbinding Club and part of the Bookbinders Collective. Mark exhibits internationally on a regular basis with his work represented in public and private collections worldwide.
